Our electronic newsletter is designed to keep you up to date on news related to our project and to the sustainable use of Baltic marine resources. There has been a tremendous amount of interest in the project and its activities and we hope to keep this momentum growing by maintaining everyone informed about further developments in the field of innovative uses of marine resources, conferences and cooperation events open to stakeholders, as well as other means of staying involved!

The project “Sustainable Uses of Baltic Sea Marine Resources” (SUBMARINER) is pleased to announce the launch of its new website!
You can now visit us online at www.submariner-project.eu, where you can learn about innovative marine uses such as algae and mussel cultivation, blue biotechnology, fish mariculture, wave energy or reed use and how they can help improve the environmental conditions of the Baltic Sea while simultaneously promoting sustainable economies. In addition to articles, reports, analyses and other publications on these topics, the website will keep you updated on important upcoming events, including registration forms for open cooperation events, so you don’t miss an opportunity to become or stay involved. Visit the site to learn about SUBMARINER’s pilot activities to test these new concepts in your country!

The project is co-financed by ERDF via the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) Programme and will run until late 2013. It is led by the Maritime Institute in Gdansk, in collaboration with nineteen partners from all EU countries around the BSR. The project will undertake the first ever assessment of the potential of these new sustainable uses in the environmental, socioeconomic and legal conditions of the Baltic Sea. As a result, we will develop a roadmap for whether and how these uses should be promoted in the future. We will also work to build a strong network to bring together all stakeholders interested in these cutting edge topics. We hope you will be a part of it!

Save the date! Conference: Algae - the sustainable biomass for the future
SUBMARINER welcomes you to a conference on the potential and future uses of algae to be held on September 28th and 29th, 2011. The event, hosted by the Municipality of Trelleborg (Sweden), will include lectures, workshops, exhibits, study tours and unique opportunities for exchange.

The event is targeted towards anyone with an interest in the latest research and practical use of algae and more specifically to national and local governments, private companies and scientists. Scanbalt Annual Forum: "10 Years ScanBalt BioRegion - Towards a Balanced Regional Development and Smart Specialization in the Baltic Sea Region"
Among the sessions to be held at the upcoming 10th ScanBalt Forum (Friday, September 23rd - Heringsdorf/Usedom, Germany) will be a discussion about the SUBMARINER project, its goals and preliminary results. Speakers will include the project coordinator and project experts on algae cultivation, mussel farming, blue biotechnology, and fish culture. MIMAS-Symposium: Microbial Interactions in Marine Systems
SUBMARINER will also be present at the upcoming MIMAS-Symposium, to be held July 6th - 8th in Greifswald, Germany. Among the main topics of the conference is the exploration of new natural compounds from marine microorganisms.

The conference will present recent results in the field of blue biotechnology and discuss the potential of advanced molecular methods for a more efficient industrial use in aquaculture (selective breeding of aquaculture species), pharmacy (novel bioactives from unusual microorganisms or newly detected metabolic pathways) and other commercial products in food, cosmetics and health, including new enzymes, biomaterials and biopolymers.
