IMPRESSIONS FROM THE RECENT SUBMARINER ALGAE COOPERATION EVENT
The Municipality of Trelleborg and SUBMARINER hosted an Algae Cooperation Event on the present and potential uses of algae, held on September 28th and 29th, 2011.
The event brought together distinguished experts and stakeholders from the Baltic Sea region and other parts of the world to showcase the state of the art in the fields of algae-related green energy, food production and other uses.
Over 150 participants joined in for two days of exciting presentations as well as a poster and exhibits session, a panel discussion with representatives from research institutions, public authorities and private companies and a study tour of Trelleborg's algae highlights. News coverage of the event, photos and download links for the speakers' presentations can be found here.
submariner magazine: the Algae issue now available!
SUBMARINER is proud to share its first magazine publication, which presents the perspectives shared by the speakers during the recent Algae Cooperation Event in Trelleborg (September 2011).
The issue contains articles focused on the latest knowledge about algae harvesting for production of sustainable energy, discussions concerning the present and potential use of algae around the Baltic Sea region, with case studies from other parts of Europe as well as a series of articles delving into the topic of algae biofuels.
SUBMARINER INITIATES COOPERATION WITH BSR AQUACULTURE PROJECTS
SUBMARINER has initiated cooperation with two new Baltic Sea region projects dealing with aquaculture:
AQUABEST (Innovative practices and technologies for developing sustainable aquaculture in the Baltic Sea Region), led by the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute in Finland.
AQUAFIMA (Integrating Aquaculture and Fisheries Management towards a sustainable regional development in the Baltic Sea Region), led by the Landgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern GmbH in Germany.
Representatives of the Lead Partners and project managers came together in October to discuss future steps for cooperation between all three projects in order to benefit as much as possible from each others activities.
SAVE THE DATE: MAY 9-10, 2012 - SUBMARINER BLUE BIOTECH COOPERATION EVENT
The Center for Marine Natural Products (KiWiZ) at IFM-GEOMAR and Norgenta North German Life Science Agency GmbH will host the SUBMARINER project’s Blue Biotechnology Cooperation Event “New Strategies and Future Perspectives”. It will take place in Kiel, Germany on May 9th and 10th, 2012.
The event will focus on the exploration of the great biodiversity of marine organisms such as algae, invertebrates, bacteria and fungi, which offer promising potential for scientific research and biotechnological application towards high value products. Topics of the event will be bioactive compounds, enzymes and biopolymers from marine organisms usable as pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and cosmetics as well as products for wellness, human care or industrial processes. Advanced scientific approaches, case studies of companies working in this field and strategies for promoting blue biotechnology will be presented.

3rd Marine Board Forum - 18 April 2012, Brussels, Belgium
It is widely accepted that advanced technologies will be essential to successfully deliver Good Environmental Status (GES) in European marine waters and a truly sustainable management of our seas and oceans. “Transformative technologies” can go even further by changing the way people and societies undertake fundamental functions (maintain health, communicate, access energy and nutrition etc). The 3rd Marine Board Forum is designed to examine emerging or future “Blue Technologies”. In this case, blue technologies are those technologies which will either be used in, or drawn from, the seas and oceans and which should have the potential to make a transformational or step-changing contribution either to marine science itself or to society.
