Preparations for the SUBMARINER Klaipeda meetings in June are running at full speed. In order to allow you to make your travel arrangements, please note the following practical information:

  • The internal partner meeting will start on Tuesday, 5 June at 09:00 and its joint part will close on Wednesday, 6 June with lunch (13:00). However, the afternoon of 6 June shall be used for smaller individual discussions and working sessions. When making your travel arrangements, please take this into account and try to stay at least until the morning of 7 June to have this additional time for discussions in smaller groups.
  • The external SUBMARINER workshop on innovative marine uses and regional development will be a lunch-to-lunch meeting, starting after lunch on Wednesday, 6 June and closing with lunch on Thursday, 7 June 2012 (13:00).
  • A block of rooms is being held at the Memel Hotel. The rate is 46 EUR per double room for single use. Please make your own reservations by calling +370 607 93826 or e-mailing to hm@memelhotel.lt giving the password "SUBMARINER project"
  • The closest international airport is Palanga airport (PLQ) with connections to both Copenhagen (SAS), Riga (Air Baltic) and Oslo (Norwegian). It is also possible to travel to Klaipeda by ferry from Kiel (Germany) and Karlshamn (Sweden), the service provider is DFDS Seaways.
  • Airport / harbour transfer: The meeting’s host, Klaipeda Science and Technology Park, has offered to arrange taxi transportation from the airport / harbour to he hotel / meeting venue. To arrange this airport transfer, please send your arrival time to paulius@kmtp.lt. A taxi driver will meet you in the airport or ferry arrival hall – look for label “Submariner”. The costs for the airport / harbour transfer have to be covered by the partner.
  • Registration: Please register by sending an e-mail to tv@sustainable-projects.eu and indicate whether you are staying for both the internal and external meeting or only for the internal meeting.

A detailed draft agenda for both the internal meeting and the external workshop are under preparation and will be circulated to all partners soon, following discussions with the meetings' hosts and the Lead Partner. The first day of the partner meeting shall be dedicated to discussions on the compendium and the interactive map. On the second day, we will concentrate on the regional cases.



Following the internal discussions on a possible SUBMARINER flagship under the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR), the Lead Partner discussed an application for flagship project status with the Priority Area Coordinator (PAC) 7 (“to exploit the full potential of the region in research and innovation”). The Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (Havs- och Vattenmyndigheten) and Norgenta North German Life Science Agency have indicated their interest to act as flagship leaders.

In this context, SUBMARINER will also have an own exhibition stand at the 3rd Annual Forum on the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark on 18 and 19 June 2012.



SUBMARINER has been asked to comment DG Mare's third interim report on Blue Growth. The report as well as the questionnaire have been sent to the compendium authors by the EPCO. Their feedback will be brought together into one common SUBMARINER comment by the EPCO. The deadline for sending individual comments to the EPCO is 7 May 2012. The deadline for submitting the response to DG Mare is 11 May 2012.

Simultaneously, there is also a public consultation ongoing. All partners are invited to take part in an online querstionnaire to give their individual feedback. More details can be found at http://ec.europa.eu/fisheries/partners/consultations/blue_growth/index_en.htm



Magdalena Matczak from the Maritime Institute in Gdansk has been invited to present SUBMARINER at a workshop on aquaculture technologies and strategies held by the AQUAFIMA project n Gdansk, Poland on 14 May 2012. The focus of her presentation will be on algae and mussel cultivation technology in the Baltic Sea Region.


During the Baltic Sea Days in Berlin, Germany, SUBMARINER project manager Angela Schultz-Zehden presented the SUBMARINER project to the CBSS Expert Group on Maritime Policy. Her presentation concentrated on the work on the compendium, but also touched upon the regional cases as well as the plans for the SUBMARINER network and flagship under the EUSBSR. During the event, Izolda Bulvinaite, policy officer at DG Mare, expressed her support to the SUBMARINER flagship application.

SUBMARINER Blue Biotechnolgy Cooperation Event – Kiel, Germany, 9–10 May 2012
