The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) is the entity charged with environmental policy and environmental protection in Germany. Our Unit for Cooperation with Central and Eastern European Countries and Newly Independent States is highly engaged in joint initiatives to improve the Baltic Sea Region environmental conditions. We represent Germany in Helcom and Baltic21 and act as coordinator of Priority 2 of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (“to preserve natural zones and biodiversity, including fisheries”). The BMU is also engaged in other INTERREG projects in the Baltic Sea Region and Central Europe (e.g. EcoRegion, 4BioMass, SPIN, Act Clean, Baltadapt).
BMU’s role in SUBMARINER
Within Submariner, BMU will focus on the assessment of new potential uses from an environmental point of view, developing an appropriate legal and economic framework to ensure that the environment is safeguarded and filtering those into transnational political strategies.
