Developing wave energy
Lithuanian coastal waters
SUBMARINER is exploring potential for development of a wave energy industry in the Baltic Sea. For this purpose, various activities are under way:
- An analysing of the environmental conditions in the Baltic Sea, in terms of various wave regimes.
- Technical implementation of wave energy generators with regards to very specific Baltic Sea conditions. A wave generator prototype has been developed and is being tested off the coast of Lithuania. The prototype will be further adjusted and developed on the basis of environmental conditions and practical test resuts.
- Preparation of a manual for potential investors in a wave energy market.
Generator awarded first prize in innovation contest
The linear generator – an essential part of the prototype – has been awarded the first prize in the “engines” category in an innovation contest at the 2012 BALTTECHNIKA exhibition in Vilnius. The wave energy device prototype has been designed to meet the specific conditions of the Baltic Sea – occasional harsh storms and relatively low energy in a yearly run. The further development focuses on minimising the investment costs and maximising the generator’s efficiency.
