The European Maritime Day is celebrated annually on 20 May since 2008. The purpose is to highlight the importance of seas and oceans and the challenges facing maritime regions and sectors, Several events are organised across Europe, and a main event is held in one place, in the form of a high level meeting and a stakeholder conference.
After Brussels 2008, Rome 2009, Gijon 2010 and Gdansk 2011, the 2012 edition will be organised in Gothenburg, Västra Götaland, Sweden – for the first time in Scandinavia and in the North Sea area. The topic of the high-level conference is "Sustainable growth from the oceans, seas and the coasts".
The European Commission is the organiser of the event, with the government of Sweden, Region Västra Götaland and the City of Gothenburg acting as local partners. The conference will take place in Eriksbergshallen in the former shipyard area of Gothenburg on 21–22 May 2012.
